Cumberland Regional College in Nipawin is excited to get started on the construction of their new facility, which will be located at the Central Park Learning Centre in Nipawin.
Construction is scheduled to begin this week or early next week, with last week being land surveying and site preparation.
The building will be built as a stand alone building, but will be attached to Central Park and is considered a big upgrade on the space that the college is currently located at.
They hope to use the new facility in the late spring of 2011 and start fall 2011 classes in the new facility.
The additional space will allow them to consolidate Nipawin's activities into one location, it will also offer ore class space, which will give them the opportunity to introduce new programs.
"It's a big project for the community and the economic spin off for construction and post-construction will also be good for the community," said Lyle Bittmann, director of development.
Community meetings were held in Nipawin prior to construction in which they heard concerns from residents and discussed the plans with the community.
Bittmann said for the most part the community has been very supportive of the new project and the opportunity that this will provide for post secondary education.
They are going to make an effort to minimize the disruption to those who live in the area and expect most of the activity to take place away from the roadway on the actual site.
Minister Norris will be in Nipawin, June 21 at 11 a.m., to make an official announcement regarding funding. This will also mark their sod turning ceremony as well.
"It's been a long road, so we're very excited about the construction," said Bittmann.
"We're looking forward to moving into the new facility."
