MORE PEOPLE WORKING IN SASKATCHEWAN THAN EVER BEFORE
Friday, July 09, 2010

Saskatchewan has set a new all-time employment record.

The Statistics Canada Labour Force Survey data released today shows there was a record 539,700 people working in Saskatchewan in June. Saskatchewan's June 2010 employment numbers show an increase of 4,100 jobs compared to the previous record set in June of last year.

At 5.5 per cent (seasonally adjusted), Saskatchewan's unemployment rate is the second lowest in Canada, behind Manitoba (5.3 per cent) and well below the national average of 7.9 per cent.

"With record population and record employment, Saskatchewan remains the place to be for Canadian workers," Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration Minister Rob Norris said. "Looking forward, we continue to see economic forecasters placing Saskatchewan among the nation's leaders this year and beyond."

"As our economy continues to grow, so too will opportunities for Saskatchewan workers," Norris said.

Regina has the lowest unemployment rate among major Canadian cities at 4.3 per cent while Saskatoon is fourth-lowest at 5.8 per cent. Regina saw a year-over-year employment increase of 1,700, while Saskatoon increased by 2,500.

"With more than 5,500 jobs posted today on www.saskjobs.ca, opportunities are still available in every corner of the province," Norris said.
