Is Nipawin Riderville?
Wednesday, July 21, 2010
By: nipawinjournal.com
Nipawin got some exciting news during half time of the Riders 24-20 victory over the Edmonton Eskimos on Saturday.

Nipawin Mayor Lawrence Rospad as well as Trent Schidlowsky of the Nipawin and District Chamber of Commerce attended the game and were brought down to the field to hear the results.

The Saskatchewan Roughrider Centennial Committee recognized five communities that will now be advancing to the fan voting portion of the 'Where is Riderville' contest.

Along with Nipawin, Avonlea, Unity, Weyburn and Yorkton are also finalists for the contest.

Now, the Chamber and the town are looking for support from the community once again, to help push Nipawin to be Riderville.

"The whole town now needs to re-decorate, with logos, signs, face paint, clothing, or whatever they want to do," said Schidlowsky.

A TV crew will be coming to Nipawin on either July 28 or 29.

"Representatives from the Saskatchewan Roughriders and corporate sponsors will be coming to town," he said.

The format will be similar to Hockeyville, where people in the community will be interviewed and footage taken of the town.

During commercial breaks of Riders games, footage will be shown to promote voting.

"When the representatives and corporate sponsors come we want them to say, 'Wow, this really is Riderville.'"

The town of Nipawin declared June 11 Rider Day, where businesses, staff members and residents decorated and sported their Rider's gear.

About 1,000 people came out to support Rider Day, June 11, by joining the longest cheerleading line at the exhibition grounds at Central Park School.

The Riderville contest is in conjunction with their 100 years and will help determine where the Riders' best fans live. The entire contest is being hosted on www.riderville.com.

Communities benefit from this contest by a variation of prizes. Some of them are: $25,000 to support minor sports, a one day football camp hosted by Riders players, coaches and alumni and a cheerleading camp in the winning community on the same day. The camp would be held in May 2011. There would also be a fan day in Riderville, to take place the same day as the football camp, where the players, coaches and alumni would sign autographs and pictures.

By becoming one of the five finalists, Nipawin will receive some media recognition.

If Nipawin is declared Riderville, the town would be recognized by road signs welcoming travelers to Riderville.

The four finalists, who are not named Riderville, will receive $2,500 for their respective minor sports or minor football programs.

Fan voting will begin on Aug. 13 and will end Aug. 31. The winning community will be announced live at the Labour Day Class, Sept. 5.
